It’s April!!!

Hello and welcome back from spring break.  Hopefully you and your family were able to spend some time together doing something fun. I sent my National Board Portfolio on March 31st so I had a very relaxing week.  I was able to clean my house and have some friends over to visit.  I haven’t been able to do that for awhile.

Now I am back and ready for the rest of the year.  This week the students are getting paid $0.25 and they love seeing how quickly they can get $1.00.  We will continue the money review and the Student Store for this month and maybe the month of May.  They are doing great with counting the money.

Tuesday, April 8 the students and I get to walk to the High School to visit “Farm Day.” We are going from 9:00 to 10:10…you are more than welcome to join us.

We have Reading Is Fundamental night this Thursday, April 10 and you are invited to come and listen to books read by teachers and students get to pick a free book of their choice. Hope you can make it.

Thanks for coming to the conference and thanks for all the books from the Scholastic Book Fair.  I used all the gift cards I received and the students love having new books in our room to read.

Thanks for providing snacks, pencils, and glue sticks.  You are all so fabulous.

Hope all is well and please write or call with any questions or concerns.  kilgorb@dpsd.org 464.5632

Happy March

Due to the completion of my National Board Certification I am going to use my time working on my portfolios instead of writing on the class website for this month. Please, refer to the Monday Folders for important information. Thank you for your understanding!!!

See you at your spring conference!!!!!!!

Last Week in February

How are you friends!!!
This week is the last week of February and we are going to end it with the celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  It will be fun to read and do some crazy Dr. Seuss activities on Thursday and Friday.

Wednesday, February 27th is an I-Care assembly at 9:30.  Our class is also going to start a 4 week unit on how to play Chess.  A teacher, Mr. Stripes will come into our classroom every Wednesday for the next four weeks to teach students basic skills about chess.

Book orders are due Friday, February 29th.

Good job on the reading marathon!!! We are also starting a Countdown Club competitions. Check out your Monday folders for important information.

We are reviewing all the values and names of coins this week and next week I will start the class store and pay children for certain things.  We will start with the penny!!!!

Please, help me out and send a measuring cup to school with your child by Thursday. We are going to do the last video in Science on Thursday or Friday and I need some more measuring tools.  Thanks!!!!!

Please, write or call if you have any questions. 464.5632 kilgorb@dpsd.org

Thanks so much. Enjoy your week!!!

Happy President’s Day!!

It’s President’s Week!!!  Hope you enjoyed your four day weekend??? Wasn’t the sun beautiful???

This week we have a short week but we will continue with homework as usual.  Go ahead and cross off Monday’s reading response BUT hopefully you still read so you can record your reading minutes for the reading marathon.

This week the class will study Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.  I have some fun activities planned for the class.

Our goal is to finish up the Solids and Liquids unit by next Friday, February 29th because I have to turn in the supplies to ESD 101 by March 3.  This week we will try to video tape one more time to get the perfect video for the Science and Math video.  All the videos we have made are fun to watch and the students are becoming great scientists.

Speaking of National’s I have four weeks to go before I turn in my Portfolio that consists of four entries.  The district provides 5 National Board days and I have already taken one in January. I want to give you a heads up and let you know that I will probably be taking one day a week for the next few weeks to work on my papers.  The good news is that in four weeks I turn in the box right before we have conferences so I will be so happy to be finished. I am so glad I was able to work with this class to show what great students they are.
Oh, the next two weeks I will be reviewing all the coins: their value and name and then March 3rd is when I will start paying students with play money BUT they will get to purchase real things at the stores during Fun Friday.  It will be so fun.

Sage has been our Star of the Week for the last two short weeks so check the website next week for what he shared.  The students love being the Star of the Week.  It is fun to see what they bring.
Hope you have a fabulous week.

Happy Valentine’s Day and 100th Day!!!

I think the four day work week makes me think I do not have to write on this website. I apologize for not writing on Monday - I must have been thinking more about the parties than writing on the website.

I hope you had a great four day week and I loved celebrating Valentine’s Day with your child.  It is always so fun to watch the students write and give each other cards and goodies.   Mrs. Shannon did a fabulous job organizing a Veggie Valentine party. We had carrots and ranch, a fruit salad with strawberry yogurt, meat and cheese, and yummy sugar cookies.  I appreciate all of your help in planning these special parties.  Also, thanks for all of my yummy goodies and presents. I think I gained about 5 pounds eating all the chocotate- tis the season right?

So next week we will be learning about the President’s, since we have Monday off for President’s Day. It is a great opportunity to have the students learn about money too.  It will be fabulous.

Hope all is well and I look forward to writing on time next week.  Smile and enjoy your long weekend.

Happy President’s Day!!!!

First week of February

It is Tuesday and I am watching the snow fall and it makes me nervous to think that school may be starting late OR not starting at all.  I sure hope the snow stops throughout the night so that I can see those wonderful students tomorrow.

This week we have been videotaping and studying liquids.  Your child is performing in all areas to my expectations. I do have to remind them to follow the I-CARE rules but it is good to remind them daily how to treat each other with care and respect.

I do have a grade level meeting on Thursday afternoon with the first grade teachers.  Mr. Don Grant will be the substitute in our room.  The students have had him in PE also so they know who he is.

Please, check the subject pages to see what new things we will be learning this month.

Next week we will have the Valentine’s Party and the 100th day celebration on February 14th.  it will be so fun. I sent home a class list so students can work on their Valentine’s for each other.

This week some girls are participating in the cheer camp that is going all week.  Ask them how their cheers are going.

Have a great week and drive safely in the snow.

Half-way there!!!

We are officially half way through the year. Today is the 90th day of school. I am so

proud of your child.

We will finish up our DRA testing and finish up Probability and Statistics in Math.  Students are doing a fabulous job writing each day.

I apologize for the lack of Family Message journaling last week.  We had a busy week and when the days were ending we did not have enough time for students to write in their journals.  This week we will work hard at filling them out each day. J

Thursday is our bowling field trip.  We leave the school at 8:45 and bowl until 10:00.  It will be so fun. Please, come if you would like to.

Mrs. Shannon will be organizing our Valentine’s Party. It is schedule for Thursday, February 14th at 2:15.

Monday, February 11th is our 100th day so be prepared to gather some things next week for our 100th day celebration.

Drive safely in the snow and stay warm.

I have a Dream!!!

Happy Tuesday. I hope you and your family enjoyed your three day weekend.  I know I did- it was cold but sunny and beautiful.

This week is a short week so we only have three days of homework.  Last week everyone brought back their homework.  I am so proud of each student.  Good job on the Family Message Journals (Thursday there was no message due to the fact I was not in the classroom).  Keep looking for the journals so you can respond to what your child has learned.

Wednesday there is an I-Care assembly at 2:30.  Each child is following the I-Care Rules so it is making it a bit harder to choose that special student.

Friday is Crazy Hair Day and the family movie night. I hope you can participate in both events.

I am going to be testing in reading this week during school hours so ask your child how they think they did.

I only have eight more weeks until my National Board papers and videos are due. I am planning on videotaping my final lesson next week during Science and Math.  The kids are excited to be back on the video tape.

Please, write or call if you have any questions. Thanks.

January 14 to January 18!!!

Happy Monday.

I did not write last week due to the fact that the first week back was a short week and last week was short, due to the snow.

This week is another busy one, but not as eventful (hopefully).

We will continue working on Probability and Statistics in Math.  The students are gathering data and organizing their information in lots of different ways.  They are working on so hard on their writing and making sure that they writing is readable.  For reading, we have broken up our reading times into two different times throughout the day and I am able to read with all the students. It was fabulous last week to watch them read and share their connections with each other.  In Science, we got our Solid and Liquids kit and we will be starting the fun lessons on Wednesday.

Thank you for doing a great job with the Family Message Journals.  The students like reading your response and writing to you each day.

I will be out of the room on Thursday, January 17th for a National Board day.  Mrs. Bennett will be in the room again!

Feel free to write or call with any questions or comments.  kilgorb@dpsd.org 464.5632

Happy New Year!!!!

I want to send a special THANK YOU for all the fabulous Christmas gifts you and your child picked out for me. I loved everything!! I hope you enjoyed “Our Holiday Cookbook” too!!!!!!

A special thanks goes to Mrs. Darla for a fun Holiday Party on the Friday before break.  Our class is so lucky to have such supportive, involved parents.  Thanks to all of you who helped out.

Welcome Back. Hope you and your family had a fabulous holiday break!!!

We have a short week this week so it will be nice to ease back into the school schedule. I have changed our daily routine a little bit and will be explaining the procedures with the children this week. Please, encourage your child to remember and follow the guidelines I sent out at conference time. This is the time of year when lots of learning takes place and it will be great to see how much growth your child will experience both mentally and physically.

We do not have homework this week but I did want to tell you that one change in our daily routine is at the end of the day. We will begin to write in our Family Message Journals each day. I would like to have your child bring the Family Message Journal back and forth from school each day. Please, read the message your child has written and please respond with a message back each day. I will encourage your child to keep it in their backpack and get it out ONLY when they write in it at school and when they take it out for you at night. My hope is to have your child explain to you something they have learned daily in first grade. I think it will be a great journal to look back at when your child gets older, too.

Please, continue to look at our class website. I have added new things that your child will be learning and working on at the start of this new year.
Book orders will be due on Friday, January 25th.

Have a fabulous week and again Happy New Year.

Write or call with any questions or concerns.
