Here’s a picture of my grandsons, Alex and Corey, reading a good book. You can see how interesting it is to them!

Read to Your Child!

“The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.”

Becoming A Nation of Readers

Reading with kids

“. . . striking disparities in what children know and can do are evident well before they enter kindergarten.” Some children have heard 13 million words spoken while other children have heard 45 million words spoken. (Hart, B. & Risley, T.R. 1995) Language learning often translates into success in school because adequate language skills are necessary for literacy learning - reading, writing, talking and listening.

Last year almost 75% of our kindergarten students could not pass the language skills test that was given in the fall.

What can parents do? Read to your child and talk to your child. These are critical activities for school success. It’s never too late to start. Children, even older ones, enjoy having a book or poem read to them! When I was a “work at home” mom, I read to my children while they ate breakfast before school. It was precious together time.
